6/25/2023 0 Comments The singing tree by kate seredyThe war is taking place, but is not described graphically. However, Christianity is by no means the primary focus of the book. "Silent Night" is sung at one point, and Christmas plays a role. The characters all profess Christianity and the values portrayed are supported in Scripture. The main focus of the story is how Jancsi, Kate, and their friend Lily grow up in the midst of the first world war, and courage, strength, and kindness are shown. Sometimes Kate doesn't listen to the adults, but she is usually punished. When World War I begins, the family, along with everyone else around them, are devastated and many of their loved ones are lost but they learn to face their struggles bravely. In this action-packed sequel to "The Good Master," set in Hungary, Jancsi and Kate are growing up Jancsi is becoming a "Good Master" himself and Kate is growing out of her tomboyish stage and beginning to care more about her looks than her adventurous side. Wonderful, clean story, though sadder than its prequel.

This, of course, is what the tears that Gerda sheds over the frozen body of Kay represent. But they can be cured of it, if they are shown love by their friends and those close to them. This suggests that a person’s individual circumstances shape their views and their personalities, and that they aren’t necessarily to ‘blame’ for how they behave. By the same token, Kay’s cynicism isn’t his own fault: it’s just his rotten luck that the grain of the mirror gets caught in his eye. But the glass doesn’t infect everyone: Gerda is able to retain her innocence even as she grows up, as is Kay once he is saved by Gerda. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Hideous heartIs it any wonder I found myself drawn to “His Hideous Heart,” a collection of stories inspired by Poe’s work? Each is told by a different author, and the original stories and poems are included. I like that idea.Īnother of my favorites is the story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” about a man who commits murder and slowly loses his mind over it, imagining he can hear the victim’s heart thumping under the floorboards. Maybe it absorbed some of the strangeness and mystery of the tales inside. Either my memory played a trick on me, or the book did. Yet when I opened it another time, I found the poem in the table of contents after all. I bought a collection of his stories and poems, but when I got home and opened it, I recall being disappointed that “The Raven” wasn’t included. Maybe you’ve read its famous opening lines: “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore…” His best known piece, “The Raven,” has a wonderful rhythm and creepy feel to it. I’ve been a fan of Edgar Allan Poe’s work for a long time. 6/24/2023 0 Comments This wicked fate bookI often found myself bored by the plot or feeling as though certain side quests were being invented merely to make the book an appropriate length. Unfortunately, I was let down by This Wicked Fate, which I thought felt victim to many of the same flaws that I saw in Cinderella is Dead. I liked the main character a lot more, and I felt that Bayron’s writing had improved. This Poison Heart was significantly better on both fronts. Prior to the publication of either book in this series, I read Bayron’s Cinderella is Dead, and while I did enjoy it overall, I found some of the characters one-dimensional and thought the plot details were a bit contrived on occasion. It is a wonderful story about self-discovery, overcoming the impossible, and the importance of family. This series beautifully weaves Greek mythology with elements of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. She and her parents decide to visit, only to find that both the estate and Briseis’s family tree are far more puzzling than they’d originally imagined. She lives in Brooklyn with her parents, but one day she receives word that she has inherited a large house in upstate New York from her birth mother. The series follows Briseis, a teenage girl with mysterious powers that allow her to control and rapidly grow plants with her mind. This book is the second in a duology, the first of which is entitled This Poison Heart. Having just finished This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron, I thought it would be the perfect time to revive my blog. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Sara raasch seriesOrphaned as an infant during Winter's defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee.
